We Begin in the East

In earth technologies, the East is where everything begins.

It is the direction of Air and Mineral. Of communication, thought, ideas, vision, and illumination. It is where we receive — where something arrives before we know what to do with it. A feeling. A pull. An image that won't leave. We sit with it. We let it form. Slowly, through words or writing or song or art, we begin to express it. Only then does it become something we can carry into the Fire to build and manifest.

The East is the planting of the seeds. Everything that grows depends on them.

I have spent years sitting with this on the land of The Horse Shoe Farm in Western North Carolina. Watching the sun come up over the ridge. Learning, slowly, what the East actually asks of us. Not action. Not output. Not the next step. Presence. The willingness to stay in the not-yet-knowing long enough for something real to form.

The elemental wheel moves East to South to West to North and back again. Each direction has its medicine. Each has its season. The East is Spring. Dawn. Birth. It is the moment before the moment — the inhale before the exhale, the seed before the root.

And within that cycle are smaller cycles. Spirals within spirals, always in motion, always beginning. Every 24 hours the sun rises in the East and offers the same invitation. Begin again. Not where you left off. Not where you think you should be. Here. Now. In this breath.

Here is what I have come to understand about the world we live in. We rush the East.

We move from idea to action before the idea has fully formed. We build things in the Fire we never thought all the way through. We complete journeys in the North — finishing, achieving, arriving — and feel strangely empty when we get there. Not because we did anything wrong. Because we never really began.

I have watched this on the land. Someone building on a property because the market seems to want it — without ever feeling into what the land itself wants to hold. A company five years in, trying to find a new angle or a new product to keep afloat — rearranging the fire, as we say in earth technologies. Moving things around in an agitated, urgent state when what is actually needed is to stop. To come back to the East. To sit in the Air and the open space where new possibility arrives.

We spend so much energy tending a fire that was never properly lit.

The frustration so many people carry today lives in the skipped East. In the vision that was never honored long enough to become clear. Earth technologies ask us to slow down here. To stay in the receiving before we move to the expressing. To let the seed be a seed before we ask it to be a tree.

I have let the pieces of GIFE move through me slowly. More slowly than felt comfortable. More slowly than the world said I should.

Looking back now I understand why. This process asked me to travel the full wheel — through the Earth, through the Water, through the Fire — to understand my last cycle and how it was preparing the ground for this one. Nine years on The Horse Shoe Farm. Building a labyrinth by hand from abandoned bricks. Watching thousands of people walk through a space and come out changed. All of it was East medicine. One long receiving. One long formation of something that needed time to become clear before it could be named.

GIFE is born now. And now we move to the Fire.

But I share this because it is not only my story. You are in a cycle too. The question worth sitting with — in earth technologies we return to it again and again — is this: which direction are you in right now? What is genuinely beginning? What needs to be released before something new can start? And are you willing to honor the East long enough to find out?

Because every morning the sun rises. And every morning the East offers the same invitation.

Begin.

Earth technologies are the elemental practices rooted in the intelligence of Fire, Water, Earth, Mineral, Nature, and Air. GIFE works with these technologies in ceremony, in sacred space design, and in the way we help individuals, organizations, and places go inside.
